Building Search-Friendly Web Applications

Building search-friendly code and infrastructure can open the door to millions of searchers looking for your products and services. Join us at SMX Advanced Developer Day to learn how search-friendly architecture can join functionality and usability as a primary tenant of web application design for substantial increases in traffic.

Topics will cover both Microsoft and Open Source development technologies and will provide best practices and practical insight on including search engine optimization techniques for a variety of implementations, including ASP.Net/Silverlight, PHP, Ruby, and Flash. Topics will also include common infrastructure components like Apache, IIS and Drupal.

Vanessa Fox

Developer Day is being programmed by Vanessa Fox, who has over 13 years of experience building websites, documenting APIs, and reading comic books. Vanessa is the founder of Nine by Blue, which looks at the relationships between development, SEO, and online marketing silos and how the data from each of these areas can be used holistically to learn more about customer behavior.

Vanessa is also features editor at Search Engine Land, a leading online journal covering the search industry. She previously created Google's Webmaster Central, which provides both tools and community to help website owners improve their sites to gain more customers from search.

Highlights the most important elements to consider for search engine optimization (SEO) when building a web application infrastructure and provides tactical details about how to implement those elements. Topics include:

  • Developing a crawlable infrastructure
  • Considerations when developing rich internet applications (using technologies such as Flash, Silverlight, and AJAX)
  • URL rewriting, redirection, canonicalization, and visitor tracking

Session 2

Platform Considerations for the Microsoft Stack and LAMP Stack
Practical tips, tricks, and workarounds for search-friendly architecture.

  • Microsoft Stack
    • Including IIS, ASP.Net, Silverlight, Microsoft SQL Server
  • LAMP Stack
    • Including Apache, PHP, Ruby, Flash/Flex, mySQL
  • CMS Considerations (such as .NET Blog Engine, AxCMS, Wordpress, Movable Type, Drupal, Joomla)

Session 3

Diagnosing Web Site Architecture Issues
Provides a checklist and workflow for diagnosing your web sites for SEO obstacles using freely available diagnostic tools.

Session 4

Expert Technical Review of Your Website
This session will bring together experts who will use all of the information and tactics learned throughout the day and apply them to detailed site reviews of the code and infrastructure of sites submitted in advance by the audience.
