Los Angeles Times
Martin Beck, reader engagement editor for the Los Angeles Times, is leading the Times’ efforts to cultivate community and connect with its audience in new ways. Working across the newsroom, Martin is helping journalists identify effective ways to use social media networks and other emerging technologies. He is also part of paper-wide efforts to improve the tools used to gather, distribute and read the news. In his 21 years with the Times, Martin has worked in a wide range of newsroom positions, including sports writer, copy editor, page designer and technology editor. In 2007, he became a web deputy for health, science, environment and obituaries, one of a team of editors leading the merger of the paper’s web and print newsrooms. After moving to the Metro desk, he helped the L.A. Now blog increase its traffic ninefold from 2008 to 2009. Martin, @latimesbeck on Twitter, is a graduate of UC Irvine and the University of Missouri journalism school. He lives in Costa Mesa with his wife and two teenagers.
