Pitches Now Being Accepted For SMX Advanced Business Track Sessions

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

One of the unique things about SMX Advanced is the SEM Business track, where we conduct several sessions about running and managing an SEM business.

The SEM Business track sessions we produced last year should give you a sense of what we’re looking for. Check them out here.

It’s no surprise that the economy is going to be the 800-pound gorilla in the room this year. And now that the illusion of SEM immunity from the recession has evaporated, I’m looking for session topics that focus on issues like:

  • What managers of SEM businesses should do differently as a result of the downturn?
  • What opportunities emerge in a recession? Should you be hoarding cash or investing?
  • How are you managing your people differently? Do communications become more or less transparent when things are going South?

Have an idea for a compelling session along these lines, or a completely different thought? Submit a pitch.

We’ll be posting the agenda for SMX Advanced the week of March 16, so don’t wait to pitch. More information on the Advanced schedule is here.

How To Speak At SMX Advanced 2009

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Want to speak at our twice sold-old SMX Advanced search marketing conference that returns to Seattle this coming June 2 & 3? Here’s everything you need to know about doing it!

Two Opportunities: Session Pitches Vs. Speaking Pitches

We have TWO different pitching opportunties.

First, we ask for session ideas as part of the session pitch process. This is the very best way to get to speak. Suggest a great session idea, and if that makes it to the final agenda, there’s an excellent chance you’ll make it as one of the speakers for that panel.

Second, after the final agenda is made, we then have a speaking pitch process. This is where we accept pitches for people to speak for any spots we have remaining open for the final agenda that’s posted.

More information about both processes is below.

Session Pitches Accepted: Now through March 12

From now (March 2) through March 12, we’re accepting pitches for sessions at SMX Advanced. This is a search marketing event for EXPERIENCED and ADVANCED search marketers. That means any session ideas that you pitch must be for topics that would make those with years of experience in the field sit up, take notice and go “wow.”

Were looking for ideas about advanced SEO topics, advanced PPC topics and for our SEM Business Track (which covers the business of selling SEM services).

Want to pitch? Then submit your session idea here. The pitch should be about 2 to 7 paragraphs long. We don’t need an essay, just a general idea of what the session would be about, along with some specifics about what you might cover speaking as part of that session. You can suggest other potential speakers, but that’s not required.

Also send some background about yourself, your company and the type of work you do. We don’t need a resume nor a lengthy bio. Just a few sentences to describe yourself.

If you’re accepted, you’ll get a pass to the entire SMX event. Travel and accommodation are not provided.

What to pitch? Something interesting or unique about search marketing. We especially favor session pitches strong in tactical advice.

What not to pitch? A session about your particular product or service. A session that features only you speaking on a particular topic.

Agenda Posted: Week Of March 16

We expect to post the SMX agenda the week of March 16. If you were accepted to speak as part of the session pitch process, you MIGHT be notified by this time. If not, hang in there until speaking openings are posted.

Speaking Pitches Accepted: March 30 through April 20

Once the agenda is posted, will next accept pitches to speak on particular panels, rather than ideas for the panels themselves. Those will be accepted via this form. If we have late breaking openings after April 20, the form will reopen (and we’ll likely do a blog post about it)

Speaker Acceptance Notices

We expect to tell everyone who pitched if they were accepted or not by April 28, 2009. That date might slip — but that’s what we’re aiming for. Everyone who submits should receive a yes or no message, in the end.
