Need to get up to speed fast on search engine marketing? Here’s your “dream agenda” for Search Marketing Expo – SMX West (March 2-4 in Santa Clara, CA).
By following this agenda, you’ll get a comprehensive introduction to Search Engine Marketing, and maximize your investment in money and time. We highly recommend that beginners attend all of the Boot Camp sessions on Tuesday March 2. We’ve also made recommendations on sessions that follow, but feel free to attend sessions that interest you most.

Monday, March 1 – Arrival Day
Kick off your conference experience right by attending the SMX Meet & Greet. You’ll make great connections with others attending SMX: speakers, alumni and other first-time attendees. It’s just the right casual and friendly atmosphere to prepare you for the days ahead. Plus, you’ll get the chance to pick up your badge and conference materials so you can avoid the first day crowds (and maybe sleep in a bit!)
Tuesday, March 2 – Day 1 – SMX Boot Camp
This is a MUST for those new to search – or if you need a refresher on the fundamentals. SMX Boot Camp explores both search engine optimization (SEO) techniques – that’s the “free” stuff – as well as paid search advertising (pay per click/cost per click). Participate in all four Boot Camp sessions, and you’ll get a strong foundation in search engine marketing (SEM)…and a Certificate of Completion to hang in your work space.
But before you report for Boot Camp duty, you’ll have the opportunity to attend our featured keynote from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. In his first address to the search marketing community, Steve will discuss what’s next for Bing, how the Bing/Yahoo relationship is progressing, and much more in an informal conversation with Search Engine Land editor-in-chief Danny Sullivan.
Then strap in for a jam-packed day of learning and discovery. Kick off Boot Camp with Keyword Research Tools & Techniques and learn how to determine what search terms your target audience is using and how you can tap into their traffic via search engines.
After lunch and a trip through the expo hall, build upon your newly gained keyword knowledge with the next session Copywriting For Search Success. Now that you have those keywords, learn how to incorporate them into your copy and create web pages that get picked up by search engines but are still user friendly.
Re-energize and refuel during the afternoon refreshment break and get ready for Boot Camp to switch gears and examine the “how to” of paid search advertising in Paid Search Fundamentals. You’ll learn the basics of purchasing placements on Google, Bing and other search engines, and the best practices of successful ads.
The final Boot Camp session looks at Search Engine Friendly Web Design. This is an incredibly important topic – if your site breaks for search engines, then it breaks for all those potential visitors from search engines. This session will give you the low down on creating search engine friendly sites that are attractive to both search engines and people.
Think your education is done for the day, now that you’ve graduated and gotten your diploma? Sure you can relax, grab a drink and some food at the Expo Hall Reception – but it is also a chance to network with attendees and the speakers you’ve heard from throughout the day. Plus there are some terrific tools and services to learn about from the SMX exhibitors – find a vendor who will help you do your job better!
Wednesday, March 3 – Day 2 – Pick Your Poison
Welcome back to Day 2 of SMX! Before you jump into today’s session, you might want to stop by and find out who won The Biggest Search Geek contest (and got a free ride, plane and all, to SMX West!) Who knows, after yesterday’s education maybe you’ll be on the stage next year!
Now that you have the basics down, you’re ready to tackle the rest of the SMX program. Days 2 and 3 offer 4 tracks each day, so you can customize your itinerary based upon your needs and focus. Two new additions to Wednesday’s line up which are perfect for those starting out…

Thursday, March 4 – Day 3 – Getting the Answers
Start off your last day with a good breakfast – as you’ve seen by now, SMX doesn’t skim on food! Then hop right into learning with Link Building Fundamentals. Links are an important factor in influencing your search engine rankings. This session covers how search engines perform link analysis to rank pages and how to increase your traffic by building quality links.
Next up is a trio of sessions in the SEO Track in which you put the presenters on the spot. These sessions are your opportunity to customize what you learn by asking the experts questions. So make sure you don’t miss Ask The Search Engines, Ask The SEOs and Ask The Link Builders.
If you are part of (or lead) an in-house marketing team, you’ll want to check out the In-house Track, which explores the good, the bad and the how-to of bringing SEO and PPC activities in-house rather than outsourcing.
